Cover Letter for job is a single page document which you should submit with your job application, CV or resume. It has an overview of your entire qualifications, experience and expertise relevant to job you want to apply for. The purpose of cover letter is to convince employers that you are most suitable candidate for the job, what you can do their company and why they should hire you. How to Write a Cover Letter?

Job cover letter is not a CV/Resume rather it is a cover page for CV and it is submitted with CV or Resume. You should not write cover letter unless a job vacancy is announced. Because if you do not know the nature, position, duties, requirements and other details of job, you cannot write an effective cover letter.

Purpose of Cover Letter:

The sole purpose of cover letter is to ensure the employer that you are most fit applicant for this Job. So Read Job description well and highlight your skills, experience and past achievements which are relevant to job nature. If you are fresher and do not have experience, you can highlight the skills you learnt during your course/training which are relevant to advertised job.

1st paragraph: You have to write here introductory lines, describe the following points:

  • You are interested in this job vacancy.
  • how did you came to know of job? for example: newspapers, online job search websites etc.
  • Describe you have enough qualifications, skills and experience to be fit for the job position.

2nd paragraph: Now target description, duties and required qualification for advertised job and describe you have got the relevant  skills and experience, so you are fit for this job. Do not repeat the CV/Resume. Just give highlights of your qualification, abilities and achievements which you got in past. So, that employer could be compelled to Read your CV/Resume and call you for interview. If you have experience, you should explained how well have worked and benefited your previous or current employer.

If you are freshers, only focus on what you have learned during your academic or technical learning course or training. But it should be only in the view of advertised job position. Do not waste time of employer.

3rd paragraph: It is time to close cover letter with “call to action” lines. You should convince employer that you want to offer your skills to him for this job. Request him to consider your CV/Resume and contact your for further information (provide contact information again).

Step # 01:

First Step is your introduction. It should be at top of cover letter. Your introduction should consist of your name at the top. Then your current skill level; for example Electrical Engineer, Plumber etc. If you don’t want to write your skill level with your introduction, no problem. Add Your contact details including your contact number, a professionally looking email address and your residential address. You can also add your social profile links like LinkedIn, Twitter.

Step # 02:

Next step is to address employer. You can find details about employer in description of job. Read job description thoroughly and find more details about employer. After your introduction and contact details, write Date,  name, address and contact details of employer.

Step # 03:

It is recommended not to write “To Whom It May Concern”. And also if you are able to find the name of employer or hiring person, it would be better to address him/her with name instead of Dear Sir/Madam. For Example: Dear Mr. Alex

Step # 04:

It is time to write first paragraph of your cover letter. Here, you should state about your interest in announced job vacancy and describe that you have enough qualifications, skills and experience to be fit for this job. You can write the source how you came to know of this vacancy , For Example: newspapers or some online recruitment agency etc.

Step# 05:

Second paragraph is most important in your whole cover letter. You can sell your skills here. Here, you need to keep in mind the job description, requirements and required skills for job as mentioned by employer or hiring manager. Write your qualification, experience and skills to tell the employers that you are very fit candidate for this job. For example: if employer wants an Electrician for Building wiring, you should describe that you have a 3 years’ diploma/training and 5 years’ experience  in this field. You can add your current job position too.

If you are fresher and do not have experience, you can highlight the skills you learnt during your course/training which are relevant to advertised job.

Step# 06:

If possible, add how your current or previous job role and how you have benefited your current or previous company.

Step# 07:

It is the last and closing paragraph of job cover letter and also called “Call to action” paragraph. In closing paragraph, you should tell them that you find this job vacancy as a best opportunity to offer your knowledge and skills to your future employer. Request them to read your attached CV/Resume or job application. Say thanks for their time and also request them to contact you at contact number or email for any further queries. Step # 08:

Ending Cover letter with “Your sincerely” or any other alternative. And write your name under your sincerely. Put your signature.

  • avoid mistakes of spellings and punctuation.
