German Green Card for Non-EU Workers

German Green Card for Non-EU Workers:

Germany has been facing difficulty in finding skilled labor. To overcome the critical situation, Germany introduced a new German green card version, the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), in June 2024 under Section 20a of the Residence Act. Its purpose is to help non-EU nationals find work easily. This version of a “green card”, the Chancenkarte is literally an opportunity card that will hopefully fill the gap of desperate labor shortage. It’s been a while since Industry associations are reporting downfalls slowing economic growth. So it’s good news for non-EU citizens, we will be also going to discuss eligibility criteria, and if you meet the requirements you can move to Germany for up to one year to search for a job, working part-time (up to 20 hours a week) while you look.

German Green Card Requirements:

The new German green card news was shared by Labor Minister Hubertus Heil this week, offering a chance for foreign nationals to visit Germany and seek work even without a job offer, you just have to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • A completed vocational qualification (at least two years of training) or a university degree that is recognized in the country where you obtained it.
  • German language skills of at least A1 level, or English skills of at least B2 level.
  • At least 6 points in the points system (points are awarded for qualification recognition, shortage occupations, professional experience, language skills, age, previous stays in Germany, and a qualifying spouse).
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the job search — a blocked account with at least €1,091 net per month (2026 amount), or a declaration of commitment.

If your qualification is fully recognized in Germany, you are treated as a skilled worker and do not need to go through the points system or prove language skills.

Minister from the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) announced the plan back in September 2022. The finalized Opportunity Card does use a points system, similar to Canada’s — applicants need at least 6 points — and the final law sets no fixed quota on the number of cards.
