Truck Driver Jobs for Foreigners 2026: Canada, UK & New Zealand Visa Guide

🚛 Truck drivers are wanted everywhere in 2026. Canada, the UK, and New Zealand all have big shortages. The pay is good. And you do not need a university degree.

But be careful. Every country has different rules. Some routes are easy. Some are almost closed. Here is the honest, simple guide for 2026.

🇨🇦 Canada — The Best Route

Canada is the best country for foreign truck drivers in 2026. Many companies hire foreigners with a work permit.

✅ The visa: The company gets an LMIA (a government paper that says no Canadian driver was available). Then you get a closed work permit. This is the most common route.
✅ The pay: CAD $50,000–$110,000+ per year. Long-haul and specialist drivers earn the most.
✅ PR pathway: After about 1 year of work, you can apply for permanent residence through PNP programs like the Saskatchewan Long-Haul Truck Driver Project. Some Atlantic provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, Newfoundland) can hire you through the Atlantic Immigration Program without a separate LMIA.
✅ Where to look: Job Bank Canada (jobbank.gc.ca) — the official government job site. Only trust employers with a real LMIA.

🇬🇧 UK — Read This Warning First

The UK has a real shortage of HGV (truck) drivers. But the visa rules are strict in 2026.

⚠️ Honest truth: Since July 2025, truck drivers (job code SOC 8214) can only get a Skilled Worker visa if the job is on the UK’s live shortage list. That list may close at the end of 2026. So the UK is possible but NOT guaranteed — always check the current list on GOV.UK before you spend money.
💰 The pay: £28,000–£45,000 per year. HGV Class 1 (big articulated lorries) pays the most.
🪪 The license: You need a UK Category C (Class 2) or C+E (Class 1) license, plus a Driver CPC certificate. Your home-country truck license cannot be simply exchanged.
🏢 Companies like DHL, Eddie Stobart, Wincanton, and XPO hire drivers — but only sponsor when the rules allow it.

🇳🇿 New Zealand — Good Pay, Real Shortage

New Zealand needs truck drivers too, and the pay is high.

✅ The visa: The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). The company must be an accredited employer — no accredited employer, no visa. Truck driving is in high demand through this route. Our New Zealand security guard guide explains how the AEWV works.
✅ The pay: NZD $32–$42 per hour for Class 4/5 long-haul drivers — about $60,000–$100,000 per year.
✅ The license: You need a NZ Class 4 or 5 license (via Waka Kotahi). Many sponsoring companies pay for your license conversion.
✅ Where to look: SEEK NZ and transport company career pages.

🪪 The License Truth — All 3 Countries

❌ You cannot just drive on your home-country truck license. Every country wants its own heavy-vehicle license.
📌 Canada: Class 1 license (name changes by province) — written test + training + road test in Canada.
📌 UK: Category C or C+E + Driver CPC — training and tests in the UK.
📌 New Zealand: Class 4 or 5 — conversion possible, often paid by the employer.
💡 Good news: your driving experience from home still counts. Companies want experienced drivers with clean records.

💰 Pay Comparison, Simply

🇨🇦 Canada: CAD $50,000–$110,000+/year — best PR pathway
🇬🇧 UK: £28,000–£45,000/year — visa NOT guaranteed, check the list
🇳🇿 New Zealand: NZD $32–$42/hour — high hourly pay, AEWV route

🌍 Compare With Other Countries

Truck driving is not the only skilled route. The Netherlands hires skilled foreigners with fast visa processing, and our Canada farm worker guide covers another LMIA route. If you already drive for a living, also see drivers to Hong Kong.

⚠️ Scam Warnings — Read This

❌ Never pay for a job offer. Real transport companies never ask drivers to pay for “visa sponsorship.”
❌ “Guaranteed UK truck driver visa” — nobody can guarantee it. The UK route depends on the live shortage list.
❌ No real company hires you over WhatsApp in 10 minutes. Real hiring means interviews, documents, and license checks.
✅ Real process: job offer first, then the employer handles the LMIA / sponsorship paperwork.
✅ Check the employer’s name. In Canada, the LMIA must be real. In NZ, the employer must be accredited.

❓ Quick Questions

Do I need a degree? No. Truck driving is about skill, experience, and license — not diplomas.
How much experience do I need? Most sponsors want 1–3 years of heavy-vehicle driving with a clean record.
Can my family come? In Canada, yes — spouses can usually get an open work permit. In the UK and NZ, partners can join on dependant visas.
Which country is easiest? Canada — the LMIA + PNP route is the most proven for truck drivers in 2026.

🚀 Final Word

If you can drive a big truck, Canada wants you in 2026 — real sponsorship, real pay, real PR pathway. New Zealand pays excellent hourly rates. The UK is possible but check the rules first. Never pay anyone for a job offer. Good luck, driver! 🚛
