Italy Seasonal Visa for Foreigners 2027: 89,000 Jobs, How to Apply & 7 December Deadline

Italy needs seasonal workers. Every year, farms need hands for harvest. Hotels and restaurants need staff for summer. Italy gives legal work visas for these short jobs. This is called the Italy seasonal visa.

Here is the most important news first. The 2027 window is open right now. Employers are pre-filling applications from 23 October to 7 December 2026. If you want a 2027 seasonal job, you must find an employer now. Do not wait until January. By then, it is too late.

Facts checked on 27 October 2026. Quotas and dates come from Italy’s Decreto Flussi 2026–2028 programme, as reported from the Ministry of the Interior portal. Always check the official Portale Immigrazione and your local Italian consulate before you apply, because quotas can change.

What Is the Italy Seasonal Visa?

The Italy seasonal visa is a work visa for non-EU citizens. It is for short, seasonal work only. It is not a permanent visa. It is not a student visa. It is part of Italy’s yearly quota system, called Decreto Flussi. Decreto Flussi means “Flow Decree” in Italian. It sets how many foreign workers can enter Italy each year.

For seasonal work, you get a Type D national visa. After you arrive in Italy, you change it into a seasonal residence permit, called permesso di soggiorno per lavoro stagionale. You can stay for the length of your contract, up to 9 months in one year. After that, you must leave, unless you legally change to a different permit.

How Many Seasonal Jobs Are There?

Italy set a big quota for 2026–2028. For 2026, the total was 164,850 work entries, with 88,000 for seasonal work. For 2027, the total rises to 165,850 work entries, with 89,000 for seasonal work in agriculture and tourism.

The main 2026 click days already passed. Agriculture was on 12 January 2026. Tourism was on 9 February 2026. That is why this guide focuses on 2027. The 2027 click days are:

  • 12 January 2027 — seasonal work in agriculture
  • 9 February 2027 — seasonal work in tourism
  • 16 February 2027 — non-seasonal work
  • 18 February 2027 — non-seasonal work in family care

⚠️ Employers must pre-fill the application before 7 December 2026. If your employer misses this step, they cannot submit on click day. This is the step many workers miss.

Who Can Apply?

✅ You are a non-EU citizen. EU citizens do not need this visa. They can work in Italy freely.

✅ You are 18 years or older.

✅ You have a valid passport.

✅ You have no serious criminal record.

✅ You are fit for physical work. Farm and hotel work can be hard. You may stand for long hours. You may work in heat.

✅ You have a real job offer from an Italian employer. This is the most important rule. Without an employer, you cannot apply.

Italy gives reserved places to workers from countries with cooperation agreements with Italy. The list includes Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Albania, Moldova, Ukraine, Peru, Ecuador and many others. If your country is on this list, you have a reserved quota. If it is not, ask your local Italian consulate. Rules can change each year.

No university degree is needed for seasonal work. No special certificate is needed for fruit picking or hotel cleaning. Basic Italian helps you at work, but it is not a formal requirement for most seasonal jobs. Men and women can apply.

What Jobs Can You Do?

🌾 Agriculture jobs:

  • Fruit picking — apples, grapes, oranges, strawberries, cherries
  • Vegetable harvesting and packing
  • Vineyard work and grape harvest
  • Greenhouse work
  • Olive picking
  • General farm labour

🏨 Tourism and hospitality jobs:

  • Hotel housekeeping and cleaning
  • Hotel kitchen helper
  • Restaurant waiter and waitress assistant
  • Catering staff
  • Beach resort staff
  • Bar and café helper

These jobs are seasonal. That means work is busy in harvest time and in summer. Work can be slow in winter. Your contract will show your start date, your end date, and your hours. Read it before you sign.

How Much Can You Earn?

Italy does not have one national minimum wage. Pay is set by sector agreements, called CCNL. That means pay changes by job, region, and hours.

For farm work, many guides quote around €7 to €14 per hour. That is roughly €800 to €1,400 per month for full-time work. Some farms pay more in peak harvest or for skilled work. Some pay less in the south than in the north. Overtime can add extra pay.

Many employers give free or low-cost housing. Many give meals or food help. Many give transport to the farm or hotel. But this is not guaranteed. It must be written in your contract. Never accept a job only because a Facebook post says “free housing.” Ask for the contract first.

The national visa fee is quoted as €116. Residence permit charges are separate, and you pay them after you arrive in Italy. Your employer does not charge you for the nulla osta. See the scam warning below.

How to Apply — Step by Step

⚠️ You cannot apply alone. Your Italian employer applies first. This is different from many other visas. If someone tells you to apply directly to the Italian government for a seasonal quota place, that is wrong.

Step 1: Find a real Italian employer — do this now, before 7 December 2026.
Search for farms, hotels, and restaurants that hire seasonal workers. Send your CV. Tell them you want a 2027 seasonal contract. A good employer will tell you clearly: the job, the pay, the hours, and the housing.

Step 2: Your employer pre-fills your application.
Your employer logs into the Ministry of the Interior’s ALI portal. For seasonal agriculture, they use Model C – Stag. They fill in your passport details, the job, and the housing proof. This pre-fill step for 2027 runs from 23 October to 7 December 2026.

Step 3: Your employer submits on click day.
On click day, the portal opens at 9:00 a.m. Rome time. Applications are taken in order. First come, first served. Quotas can fill very fast. That is why pre-filling early matters.

Step 4: You get the nulla osta.
If your application is approved, the immigration office, called Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione, issues a nulla osta. This is your work authorisation. It is sent to the Italian consulate in your home country. Seasonal cases are often evaluated in about 20 days, but this can take longer. The nulla osta is valid for 6 months. You must apply for your visa in that time.

Step 5: Apply for your visa at the consulate.
Take your passport, your nulla osta, your job contract, photos, and other documents to the Italian embassy or consulate in your country. Apply for a Type D seasonal work visa. Visa processing is often around 20 working days, but it can vary by country.

Step 6: Travel to Italy and get your residence permit.
After you arrive, you must apply for your permesso di soggiorno within 8 working days. You will also get a codice fiscale, which is your Italian tax code. Do not miss the 8-day rule. It is very important.

Documents You Need

  • Valid passport
  • CV or resume
  • Passport photos
  • Job offer or contract from your Italian employer
  • Nulla osta, once your employer gets it
  • Proof of housing, if the consulate asks for it
  • Any work experience certificates, if you have them

Your employer also needs documents. They must show their company is registered, they pay tax and social security, and the housing is suitable. If an employer cannot show these, do not trust the offer.

Where to Find Real Seasonal Jobs in Italy

Use official and well-known portals first. Do not trust only WhatsApp groups or random Facebook pages.

  • EURES — the EU job portal at eures.europa.eu. Search for Italy, then agriculture or hospitality.
  • ClicLavoro — Italy’s official government job portal.
  • Coldiretti — Italy’s main agricultural association at coldiretti.it. Many farms hire through Coldiretti.
  • Confagricoltura / Agrijob — another big farm employers’ group at confagricoltura.it.
  • Portale Immigrazione — the official immigration portal at portaleimmigrazione.it. This is where your employer files the nulla osta.

You can also check your own country’s overseas employment office. Some countries have bilateral agreements with Italy. They can tell you which agencies are licensed.

Returning Workers: The Multi-Year Seasonal Permit

If you worked legally in Italy before, ask your employer about a multi-year seasonal permit. In 2026, Italy reserved 5,000 places for this route.

This permit can last up to 3 years. Each year, you can stay up to 9 months. To qualify, you must have worked in seasonal work in Italy at least once in the previous 5 years. This route makes it easier to return each season without starting from zero.

Can You Stay Longer in Italy?

Many readers ask this. Here is the honest answer.

❌ Seasonal work alone does not lead to permanent residence. Time on a seasonal permit does not count toward long-term residence.

❌ Your family cannot join you on a seasonal visa. Seasonal permits are for the worker only.

✅ You may be able to change to a non-seasonal permit. If you have worked at least 3 months in Italy on a seasonal permit, and an Italian employer offers you a fixed-term or permanent non-seasonal job, you can apply to convert your permit. Since a 2024 law change, this conversion is outside the Decreto Flussi quota. But it still needs approval. It is not automatic. Do not pay anyone who promises a guaranteed conversion.

If you want a long-term route instead, read our other guides. For example, our Australia caregiver guide explains a PR pathway for carers, and our UK NHS healthcare assistant guide explains sponsored health jobs. Italy seasonal work is best if you want short, legal work and a chance to return each season — not if you need to bring your family at once.

⚠️ Scam Warning — Read This Before You Pay Anyone

Italy seasonal visa scams are very common on Facebook and WhatsApp. Protect yourself:

  • ❌ Never pay €500 to €5,000 in advance “processing fees” to guarantee a permit. Real employers do not charge workers for the nulla osta.
  • ❌ Never send money before you have a written job offer with the employer’s full name, address, and registration details.
  • ✅ Check the employer. In Italy, you can check a company’s VAT number, called Partita IVA, on the official business register.
  • ❌ Do not trust “instant visa” or “100% guaranteed quota” promises. Quotas are first come, first served. No agent can guarantee your place.
  • ❌ Do not send passport copies to unknown recruiters on WhatsApp or social media.

If an offer looks too good — very high salary, free everything, instant visa — it is usually a scam. The same scam rule applies in our New Zealand security guard guide and our Saudi security guard guide: real employers apply and pay, not the worker.

What to Do This Week — Your Checklist

  • ✅ Prepare your passport. Check it is valid for your whole stay.
  • ✅ Make a simple CV. Add your farm, hotel, or cleaning experience, if you have any.
  • ✅ Contact real Italian employers now. Tell them: “I want a 2027 seasonal contract. Can you pre-fill my application before 7 December 2026?”
  • ✅ Ask for the job in writing: pay, hours, housing, start date, and end date.
  • ✅ Do not pay any agent upfront.
  • ✅ Keep copies of everything: contract, nulla osta, visa, and residence permit.

Italy seasonal work is hard work. The pay is modest. The stay is short. But it is legal work, with a contract, health cover, and a chance to return next season. If you prepare now, before 7 December 2026, you give yourself the best chance for 2027.
